Background
The Synthetic &: Art Silk Mills" Research Association (SASMIRA) is a co-operative venture set up by man-made textile industry as multipurpose, multifunctional institute to serve its scientific and technological needs. Sasmira was established on January 12, 1950. The Institute “Sasmira’s Institute of Man-Made Textiles” (SIMMT) was established in the Year 1961 with Textile Technology & Textile Chemistry and Knitting Technology was added later in the Year 1984. |

The imposition structure of Sasmira in marble stands on a plot of land admeasuring 11,809 sq. meters at the foot of Worli Hill, Mumbai. Completed in 1958, the building is unique in its architectural excellence and stand majestically amidst the modern building housing some of the internationally reputed business organizations. The nearest Railway station to reach SASMIRA is Dadar. Lot many BEST buses from Plaza stop are going through the Institute route. The Institute itself is Landmark. |

Objectives: |

Sasmira's objectives are to undertake research and other scientific works in connection with the man-made textile industries in particular the textile industry in general and other trades or industries allied therewith or accessory thereto; to direct research towards the investigations and improvement of raw materials used in the manufacturing process for greater productivity, and to impart technical education in the technology of textiles to the personnel engaged at various levels in the industry and there by the help the industry build up a competent, qualified technical cadre.
SIMMT’s Objectives is to develop and conduct need based curricula so as to develop Technical, Managerial and Entrepreneurial skills. Dissipation of the latest developments which in turn will upgrade the skills and knowledge of technicians through fulltime Diploma Programs. |

Autonomous Status |
|
Sasmira’s Institute was awarded Progressive Academic Autonomy in the year 1996-97 by the Government of Maharashtra vide G.R. No. EXAM/2595/1192/(17/955) TE-2 dated 6th February 1996 in recognition of the high standard of education, closer linkage of the Institute with textile industry and reputation. Accordingly full time Diploma programs of the Institute are enjoying academic freedom empowering it to experiment, innovate design and develop its own curriculum in order to keep pace with the industrial and technological developments. This is achieved through involvement of qualified people from industry in curriculum development. Under autonomy, Semester pattern is followed and examination is conducted after every 6 months. The Institute follows multi point entry and credit system. |
